PostSubject: Grammar lesson; #1   Mon Nov 11, 2013 10:55 pm

In this forum you will be introduced into the concept of grammar. Grammar is an important value to master. It can help you get a job, meet new people, and learn new languages. Before I start, I will tell you about the lack of grammar in the modern society.

When you look around at what people are saying, either it be on Roblox or in the real world, grammar is becoming scarce. It is rather rare to come across someone with perfect grammar, even I will admit: my grammar is not the best.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly I will start out with punctuation. This is something that everyone must master, but when do we use it? Below is the list of the common punctuation symbols and how to use them.

.          A period is used at the end of a sentence. There is no space between the last word and period.

,          A comma is used to separate the elements in a sentence; it is also used to separate two independent clauses. We do this by using a comma and a conjunction (FANBOYS  [for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so] ). “He ran very fast, but not fast enough.”

:          A colon is used before a list or an explanation that is followed by a clause that can stand alone.

;          A semicolon is used to sort out a list or to separate to related clauses.

An Ellipsis is used when there is a portion of a quote or sentence that is omitted. “There is a lot of water … [left out portion, replaced by ellipsis] for one person.” Instead of “There is a lot of water in that lake for one person.” Or it can be used at the end of a sentence that has words omitted. “I wonder…”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we will talk about commonly mixed up words. We will be using “There” [“Their”, “They’re”], “Your” [“You’re”], and “Who” [“Whom”]. Below is when to use each one, and how it is used;

There – “Go over there.”  When talking about a location.
Their – “Go to their house.” When talking about possession of something to a person, place, or thing.
They’re – “They’re very nice.” A contraction of “They” + “Are” = “They’re”.

Your – “Your friend is nice.”  Talking about another person, place, or thing.
You’re – “You’re nice.” Talking to a person, place, or thing. A contraction of “You” + “Are” = “You’re”.
*An easy way to know which one to use is by replacing “Your” or “You're” with “You are”. If the sentence does not make sense, then it is “You” if “You are” works, then it is “You’re”.

Who – “Who are you?” You use this when you know the Subject (“You” in this case).
Whom – “To whom does this belong to?” You use this when you do not know the subject.
*When you’re trying to figure out when to use “Who” or “Whom”, think this; If you do not know the subject (the person, place, or thing) then use “Who”. If you do not know the subject, then use “Whom” (asking about the subject).

A – "That is a nice tie." Used when the following word starts with a consonant sound.
An – "That is an awesome tie." Used when the following word starts with a vowel sound [a,e,i,o,u].

That is all for today’s lesson. Thank you all for reading, and keep using good grammar!

Actually it's a conjunction.

They’re – “They’re very nice.” A conjugation of “They” + “Are” = “They’re”.
^This is what I have been speaking of the entire time; this is a contraction of the words they and are.

also, why that link? We haven't talked about commas.

Great idea. But most LRs that need grammar lessons aren't on the FEAR forums. Try teaching this at a training, or posting it to the main ROBLOX forums.

I would love to, but the majority of people really don't want to see FEAR School revived, even with the improvements I am suggesting. I don't want to be THAT guy. Lol Razz
